Understanding EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound)

EUS combines endoscopy and ultrasound to obtain high-resolution images of the digestive tract and surrounding tissues.

How does it work? A special endoscope with an ultrasound probe is inserted into the digestive tract. Sound waves create detailed images of internal organs and lymph nodes.

Why is it performed?

  • Diagnose tumors in the digestive tract and nearby organs
  • Stage cancers
  • Guide fine needle aspiration (FNA) for biopsies
  • Evaluate unexplained abdominal pain

Side Effects:

  • Mild throat discomfort
  • Rarely, bleeding, infection, or perforation
