Understanding ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)

ERCP is a combined endoscopic and imaging procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, pancreas, and gallbladder.

How does it work? A long, flexible endoscope is inserted through the mouth to the duodenum. A contrast dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts, and X-ray images are taken.

Why is it performed?

  • Detect and remove gallstones
  • Diagnose tumors, strictures, or blockages
  • Place stents to relieve obstructions
  • Take tissue samples (biopsies)

Side Effects:

  • Temporary sore throat or bloating
  • Risk of pancreatitis, bleeding, or infection
  • Rare risk of perforation
